Award for Biotechnology Project of Linde-KCA-Dresden GmbH |
| 2009-05-06 |
For the first time, a production facility planned by Linde has been honoured with the award "Facility of the Year". The facility means the new production centre for biotechnological production of API’s established for the client F.Hoffmann-La Roche AG at its Headquarters in Basel, Switzerland.
Once a year the prestigious organization International Society of Pharmaceutical Engineering (ISPE) allocates the award „Facility of the Year“. After the evaluation by an international jury and expert commission, the MAB-plant turned out to be the best in the category „Project Execution“ and was awarded the title „Facility of the Year“.
Linde-KCA-Dresden functioned as the main contractor for the Engineering of this new Biotech facility for Roche. In this plant, so-called monoclonal antibody (MAB) products, such as Avastin®, are manufactured for use as anti cancer medications. The project was planned and constructed in 2005/06, and commissioning was successfully completed with pharmaceutical qualification/validation runs in 2007/08.
During the Project realization, the joint team of specialists of Roche, Linde, the Construction Manager and numerous specialised companies had to cope with several challenges:
Complex biotechnological process under sterile conditions |
Confined conditions on the place of installation |
„Ultra Fast Track“ Time schedule |
Seismic zone IIa |
Defined cost budget |
During the construction phase only a very small area was available for a construction site installation. For this reason, in agreement with local authorities and the work crew, a special solution was selected:
the containers for the construction site installation were erected on stilts and bridges above the streets of the construction area and a main municipal road in front of the building.
Fermentation processes taking place in biotechnology plants require super pure oxygen. During the early planning phase, the process specialists of Linde-Engineering and the gas specialists of Linde PanGas Switzerland already closely coordinated requirements and specifications. Linde PanGas has obtained a contract from Roche to supply the MAB-Plant with oxygen from an Onsite-Plant due to the early involvement, meeting specific customer requirements and a good oxygen price. |
